Occupational Therapy Assistant Job Trends in New York

April 27, 2023

Occupational Therapy Assistants are essential in providing rehabilitative services to patients in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, schools, and home-based early intervention. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for OTAs in New York, which is expected to continue in the coming years.

One of the primary reasons for the increased demand for OTAs in New York is the aging population. As the baby boomer generation ages, there is a greater need for healthcare services, including occupational therapy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, New York has one of the largest aging populations in the country, with over 16% of the state's residents aged 65 or older. This demographic shift has created a growing demand for occupational therapy services, including those provided by OTAs.

Another factor contributing to the demand for OTAs in New York is the increasing recognition of the importance of occupational therapy in healthcare. Occupational therapy is now recognized as a critical component of healthcare, helping patients recover from injuries, surgeries, and illnesses. As healthcare providers continue to recognize the value of occupational therapy, the demand for OTAs is expected to increase.

Finally, many OTAs are finding a rewarding niche in providing home-based Early Intervention services focusing on Applied Behavior Analysis.  This option has seen an upward trend because of its great flexibility in scheduling and higher earning potential.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that employment of OTAs in New York is projected to grow by 25.7% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is expected to create approximately 1,020 new OTA jobs in New York by 2029. This growth is due to an increased demand for occupational therapy services, particularly in-home healthcare and outpatient care centers.

In terms of salaries, the BLS reports that the median annual wage for OTAs in New York was $63,210 as of May 2021. This is higher than the national median annual wage of $62,940 for OTAs. However, salaries can vary depending on factors such as experience, education, and location.

In conclusion, the job trend for occupational therapy assistants in New York is very positive. With a growing demand for healthcare services and a recognition of the importance of occupational therapy, the need for OTAs is expected to grow in the coming years.
